Pennyfield Lock in Montgomery County, Maryland

The environment along the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal going north from the Pennyfield Lock, an eBird hotspot in Montgomery County, Maryland, provides habitat for water fowl along the Potomac River and impoundment ponds. Bald eagles are present as well as multitudes of other species. One can walk along the canal up to Violette's Lock (about 2.8 miles - 4.5 km), another hotspot. Or, you can turn around at mile marker 21 and walk back along the Potomac River (some very minor bushwhacking involved; see pink line on map). Here is a satellite view:
